How do I get there?We are in the Byron Hinterland, so if you’re flying in from interstate, we are 20 minutes from Ballina airport by car, or if you’re flying into the Gold Coast (Coolangatta Airport) it is 45 minutes by car, or 20 minutes from Byron Bay.
What can I expect when I go to a Bhavana class?
We promise you a day of incredible experiences! We understand that each of our guests will have their own experience, and take away things that resonate with them throughout the day. Overall, you can expect a warm welcome from the Bhavana team, a stunning farm tour, foraging and harvesting, culminating with a lunch experience in a luxe country setting. There will of course be an interactive and hands on cooking and kitchen experience, a relaxed exploration into nutrition relating to your chosen class, a few giggles, and some gorgeous wines to accompany our lunch together.
What should I wear?
The best thing to wear is something you feel comfortable in! Jeans and t-shirts, and or long sleeves depending on which season you’re visiting us. We have a “no open shoe” policy as you’ll be working in our kitchen. We’d suggest flat shoes and no heels, as you will be walking around a garden and harvesting produce as well as being in the kitchen. (Note: Gumboots will be provided for our garden forage – so don’t fret if ballet flats are your shoe of choice.)
Do I need to be able to cook? Will I be asked to do something I don’t know how to do?
Fear not! We have guest at all levels of capability in the kitchen attend our classes, and the answer is you don’t need to be able to cook to join in. Our Resident Chef Jo will be demonstrating what you will need to do, and the rest of the Bhavana team will be there to assist you in anyway. After all, we want you to have an amazing day!
Do I need to bring gumboots or wet weather gear?
Yes you need to bring wet weather gear if forecast for rain, e.g. gumboots, boots, raincoat, umbrella.
Will I know enough to participate?
We have guests at all levels of curiosity about cooking, organics and nutrition. Our classes are suitable for everyone.
How many will there be in the class?
Our classes are intimate and there will be 10 guests in each class, and of course the Bhavana team.
Can I bring my kids?
This is one of those experiences you want to enjoy kid-free, so we recommend getting a sitter or leaving the kids at home! If you should require this service we are happy to provide some recommendations for you. That being said, if you have children between 12 and 16, we offer separate classes for this age group, as well as parents and kids combined classes.

Is this an ‘experience’ or just ‘another’ cooking workshop?
A day at Bhavana is an amazing experience, from harvesting produce in our garden, to preparing a delicious lunch with the rest of the guests and the support and assistance from our team. After a morning of preparing and cooking, we sit down to a stunning lunch in a luxe country setting and enjoy an afternoon of relaxation. It’s a total experience that you will want to repeat time and time again with each of our unique classes!
Is this suitable as a gift for someone?
Absolutely, it’s the perfect gift for a friend or loved one. We have a ‘Gift Voucher’ option, whereby you can nominate the amount you and name of the person you wish to gift. This may be the full priced workshop or simply a contribution to a workshop.
Would this be a workshop be suitable for a group of friends?
Look no further! This is the PERFECT workshop for a group of friends to come along to, girls weekend away, friends catching up, Mother’s Group?
Would you recommend a couple doing a Bhavana workshop?
We love having couples participate together in a Bhavana experience. Not only will you have an amazing day together, but you have the additional benefit of supporting each other with new learnings when you head back to your regular routines, it’s a perfect day out.
Are there any accommodation venues you recommend?
Yes, we recommend a number of venues in both Byron and the Hinterland area, there is accommodation to suit individuals, couples and groups. Please refer to the Accommodation menu on out site.
How long does the workshop go for?
It’s an all day experience 9:30am – 4:00pm, including harvesting, preparing, cooking and a beautiful sit down lunch.
Is the day at Bhavana fun or is it intense learning?
Bhavana is about getting away from your busy life and having a relaxing and nurturing experience. Our intention is for you to leave feeling blissful and inspired with new knowledge.
Our Cancellation Policy
At Bhavana our classes are intimate and limited to 10 participants, so unfortunately we are unable to offer you a refund if you can’t attend.
In circumstances where you are unable to attend, we are very happy for you to transfer your booking to to a friend or loved one. If you would like to transfer to a class on another date or hold a credit with us, we will need 14 working days notice.
If you should need to cancel your attendance at a workshop 4 weeks prior to your booked and purchased workshop date, we are able to offer you a full refund.
If you should need to cancel your attendance at a workshop 3-4 weeks prior to your booked and purchased workshop date, we are able to offer you a 50% refund.
If you should need to cancel your attendance at a workshop 2 weeks prior to your booked and purchased workshop date, we are not able to offer a refund.
Is there accommodation at Bhavana?
There is no accommodation at Bhadra, the home of Bhavana, for guests participating in our classes. Please refer to our recommended Accommodation page.
Can I do all classes that are run over a weekend?
Typically we run different classes on Friday, Saturday and Sunday allowing those guests who wish to participate in a weekend of cooking to do just that. However, it’s all about you, so if you wish to participate in one, two, or three days, Bhavana welcomes you.
Do we cater for vegan, vegetarian and or Halal eating?
At Bhavana, some meals may be vegan or vegetarian, however we will also be cooking with local organic meat, poultry and/or fish produce. We do not cater for Halal eating practices.
Do we have to clean up after cooking?
An experience at Bhavana is about relaxation, so cleaning up throughout the day is not on your agenda, it will be attended to by our wonderful team, allowing you to relax and enjoy the full experience.
Do we get to take anything we’ve made home with us?
Yes there will be some some product made especially to take home with you. Although the majority of preparation and cooking is to be enjoyed at our afternoon sit down lunch together.
Do you have any classes that will help me better understand and deal with my children/family member who has/have allergies?
Our ‘Cooking for Allergies and Intolerances’ is EXACTLY the workshop for you. This class has been carefully designed to break down the challenges associated with these issues, and will give you the opportunity to learn how to make healthy, delicious meals and snacks with appropriate alternatives. We specifically look at the 7 most common foods affecting people today and provide you with the knowledge, skills and confidence to use REAL food substitutes for your cooking and baking needs.
I have issues with my gut, is there a workshop you can recommend to help me?
Our winter workshop, ‘Nourish Your Gut’ is one Jo has specially prepared for you. This workshop includes how to make nutrient rich gelatinous stocks, broths and soups, you will learn about how the gut is referred to as the “second brain”, you will learn the concept of “weed, seed and feed”, as well as simple and easy methods of fermenting your own vegetables and making your own elixirs.
